Learn how carriers calculate billable weight based on package volume.
Dimensional (DIM) weight reflects package density—the amount of space a package occupies relative to its actual weight. Freight carriers charge whichever is greater: the actual weight on the scale or the calculated DIM weight.
To calculate dimensional weight in inches and pounds:
The standard DIM factor for major domestic carriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL) and international air freight is 139 for Imperial measurements and 5000 for Metric measurements (cm/kg).
If a box measures 12" × 12" × 12" (1,728 cubic inches):
1,728 ÷ 139 = 12.43 lbs → Rounded up to 13 lbs billable DIM weight.
