Determine exact billable weight and dimensional policies for FedEx Express and Ground shipments.
FedEx assesses dimensional (DIM) weight on all Express, Ground, and International packages. DIM weight reflects package density—the amount of space a package occupies relative to its actual physical weight.
For standard imperial measurements (inches and pounds), calculate volume and divide by the standard 139 factor:
(Length × Width × Height) ÷ 139 = Dimensional Weight (lbs)
For metric measurements (centimeters and kilograms), use the metric divisor of 5000:
(Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ 5000 = Dimensional Weight (kg)
FedEx rounds fractions of an inch to the next whole number (e.g., 10.1 inches becomes 11 inches). Always check package girth (Length + 2xWidth + 2xHeight) to avoid additional handling or oversize surcharges when shipping large, lightweight cartons.
